15 steps to creating a successful newsletter (and a nice lunch)
31st August, Orange (Old Convent)
Newsletters are all about creating content to build relationships and when done right they are SUPER POWERFUL. Its all about sending out good content that gives your readers/ customers real value, builds trust, and establishes you as an authority in your field. This the best kind of marketing and builds lovely long term relationships with your customers.
I have been writing and consuming e-newsletters for many years now and in this world of social media algorithms and short attention spans, am more convinced than ever in the benefits a good newsletter can bring to any business (big, small or fledgling). So in this morning workshop, I will share 15 steps to planning, creating and executing a successful newsletter that will hopefully do all of the above. Then we’ll share a light lunch together and chat and mull it all over before hometime. This is an investment in your business and you can be back at your desk for the afternoon, so don’t feel bad about taking the morning off to come along and learn and network with us.
Cost – $110pp includes workshop, booklet of worksheets to take away, coffee and bickies on arrival and lunch.
Venue – The Old Convent, Borenore (10mins from Orange)
Dates and time – Friday 31 August. 10am – 1pm

Here’s what people said about my most recent newsletter workshop…
“Thank you for your time last week helping us learn how to create effective newsletters. I loved the instruction booklet you gave to us and how you made the workshop relevant to both for profit and not for profit organisations. It was a pleasure to be in your company, you were very knowledgeable and friendly.” Elise Taylor
“Sophie’s newsletter course got me motivated to try new things and reinvigorate the newsletters I write for work. It’s also a great networking opportunity with likeminded people in the area. Emily Mitchell, Communications Manager Orange 360
“In a short two hour session you had the Worksop jam packed with useful content and discussion. I thoroughly enjoyed the session and have been raving about it. I look forward to keeping in touch and attending future workshops. Lee Cobb
‘Sophie’s enthusiasm is infectious and she’s equally passionate. I took away some really helpful tips and am inspired to be more creative with my own writing and how I reach people.’ Lucy McEvoy, Centre for Rural and Remote Mental Health

Because, if a dinner party happens but doesn’t appear on IG, did it even happen at all? Just kidding – this is going to be a good chance not only to cook and share some great recipes but also share the tricks and tips that work for me when taking photos of food for my social media feeds and blog Local is Lovely.

Visual Storytelling – A one day, hands on workshop on how to compose, style, shoot, caption and share GREAT images for social media
23 November, Rydal
A one day workshop with Sophie Hansen and Annie Herron at Rydal, NSW – how to compose, capture, caption and share images that tell your story in the most engaging way possible. We are so excited to be launching this brand new workshop for anyone wanting to improve their photography (iphone or camera) and feel more confident in how they edit, caption and share content on social media. We will cover the basics of composing engaging images, how to shoot them on your smartphone (or camera if you prefer) and how to edit them so they really pop. Then we’ll move on to the words – how to write and edit captions that tell a story, that engage and motivate your customers so they become community members and your biggest advocates.
10am – Morning tea and intro
10.30 – 11.30 – Visual storytelling; how to compose and shoot photos that will stop people mid-scroll and draw them in to your story. Annie is an art teacher with 40+ years experience in helping people understand the importance of good composition and this morning she’ll really get us to slow down, really think about what we are saying in our photos and how to put together engaging still life’s, flat lays and/or portraits. Sophie will share her experience and thoughts on food and product styling, how to use your camera/iphone, the best angles for different shots and the basics of how to tell a story through each photo. We will get you all sketching thumbnails, setting up scenes and taking photos in guided hands-on exercises.
12.30 – 1.30 – Lunch! We’ll set up a long lunch in the garden (weather permitting) and stop to eat, talk and get to know each other.
1.30-2.30 – Here’s a chance for everyone to practise either with their own produce or product brought along, or the props Sophie will provide to set up a few scenes and with our guidance and shoot away with Annie and Sophie’s guidance and your newfound appreciation of the importance of composition, the story behind the photo and finding beautiful light to shoot in (ps this is easy because the woodshed studio is natural light heaven).
2.30-3.30 – Over a working afternoon tea, we will cover how to write captions that, with your images, really show (rather than tell) your people what you do, why you do it and why that matters to them. We’ll cover hashtags and any other social media questions here too.
3.30-4.30 – Editing your work; a tutorial on editing images and words before hitting publish!
4.30pm – Hometime, and hopefully everyone will head away with a phone/camera full of beautiful images, lots of ideas, confidence and inspiration to go forth and storytell in a way that will grow your community and their excitement around what you do and the products and/or services you offer.
Cost – $350 includes full day workshop plus morning tea, lunch and afternoon tea (what a great investment in your business!)
Date and time – Friday, 23 November, 10-4pm
Location – Kimbri Farm, Rydal. The workshop will be held in Annie’s woolshed studio, the venue of her residential art classes for the past 30 years and all Local is Lovely food photography workshops in recent years. Rydal is 20 minutes from Lithgow, 30 minutes from Blackheath, 40 minutes from Bathurst and 2 1/2h from Sydney. Why not make a weekend of it! We can recommend local B&Bs and given our proximity to the Blue Mountains, would love to hook you up with an itinerary of places to eat, drink, stay and play in the area after our day together.
HOSTS – Annie Herron has been teaching art for over 40 years and is a painter and sculptor holding regular exhibitions in Sydney (and beyond) with Maunsell Wicks Gallery. Sophie Hansen is a food writer and photographer with 20 years experience in food and more recently, online media. Her first book Local is Lovely (named after her blog) was published in 2014 and her second will be published by Murdoch Books in Autumn 2019. She runs social media ecourses for producers and rural/regional businesses through My Open Kitchen, co-hosts a podcast of the same name and in 2016 was named RIRDC National Rural Woman of the Year.
Content planning and creation for Christmas (yes, we said it)
October 12, Orange (Old Convent)
Christmas sneaks up on the best of us….so… we thought it might be helpful to get A small group together to get planned for this crazy busy but potentially very profitable time of year.
In this one day workshop, we are going to help you plan out and build a content strategy for your Instagram feed that will run from November right up to the big day and solve your people’s pain points (don’t you love my fancy marketing speak!) by showing them how whatever it is that you do, can help them either in terms of gifts, services, advice, catering, places to go or send people (that kind of thing). Sophie Hansen, stylist Fliss Dodd and photographer Pip Farquharson will host this workshop together and you’ll have a chance to work with all three of us throughout the day.
We will split the day in two – first half will be planning what and how you are going to share, so you will go away with a content strategy ready to roll out (how good does that sound!). And after a nice shared lunch, we’ll hit the styling and photography bit, so bring your product of anything else that helps tell your story. We will have lots of props on hand too. Sophie, Pip and Fliss will offer one on one help to the group so everyone walks away with a memory card and/or phone full of great content ready to share.
Cost – $400pp includes full day workshop/planning/hands on shooting plus morning tea, lunch and afternoon tea.
Venue – The Old Convent, Borenore (10 mins from Orange)
Date and Time – Friday October 12, 10-4pm
