Visual Storytelling – A one day, hands on workshop on how to compose, style, shoot, caption and share GREAT images for social media

A one day workshop with Sophie Hansen and Annie Herron at Rydal, NSW – how to compose, capture, caption and share images that tell your story in the most engaging way possible. We are so excited to be launching this brand new workshop for anyone wanting to improve their photography (iphone or camera) and feel more confident in how they edit, caption and share content on social media. We will cover the basics of composing engaging images, how to shoot them on your smartphone (or camera if you prefer) and how to edit them so they really pop. Then we’ll move on to the words – how to write and edit captions that tell a story, that engage and motivate your customers so they become community members and your biggest advocates.
10am – Morning tea and intro
10.30 – 11.30 – Visual storytelling; how to compose and shoot photos that will stop people mid-scroll and draw them in to your story. Annie is an art teacher with 40+ years experience in helping people understand the importance of good composition and this morning she’ll really get us to slow down, really think about what we are saying in our photos and how to put together engaging still life’s, flat lays and/or portraits. Sophie will share her experience and thoughts on food and product styling, how to use your camera/iphone, the best angles for different shots and the basics of how to tell a story through each photo. We will get you all sketching thumbnails, setting up scenes and taking photos in guided hands-on exercises.
12.30 – 1.30 – Lunch! We’ll set up a long lunch in the garden (weather permitting) and stop to eat, talk and get to know each other.
1.30-2.30 – Here’s a chance for everyone to practise either with their own produce or product brought along, or the props Sophie will provide to set up a few scenes and with our guidance and shoot away with Annie and Sophie’s guidance and your newfound appreciation of the importance of composition, the story behind the photo and finding beautiful light to shoot in (ps this is easy because the woodshed studio is natural light heaven).
2.30-3.30 – Over a working afternoon tea, we will cover how to write captions that, with your images, really show (rather than tell) your people what you do, why you do it and why that matters to them. We’ll cover hashtags and any other social media questions here too.
3.30-4.30 – Editing your work; a tutorial on editing images and words before hitting publish!
4.30pm – Hometime, and hopefully everyone will head away with a phone/camera full of beautiful images, lots of ideas, confidence and inspiration to go forth and storytell in a way that will grow your community and their excitement around what you do and the products and/or services you offer.
Cost – $350 includes full day workshop plus morning tea, lunch and afternoon tea (what a great investment in your business!)
Date and time – Friday, 23 November, 10-4pm
Location – Kimbri Farm, Rydal. The workshop will be held in Annie’s woolshed studio, the venue of her residential art classes for the past 30 years and all Local is Lovely food photography workshops in recent years. Rydal is 20 minutes from Lithgow, 30 minutes from Blackheath, 40 minutes from Bathurst and 2 1/2h from Sydney. Why not make a weekend of it! We can recommend local B&Bs and given our proximity to the Blue Mountains, would love to hook you up with an itinerary of places to eat, drink, stay and play in the area after our day together.
HOSTS – Annie Herron has been teaching art for over 40 years and is a painter and sculptor holding regular exhibitions in Sydney (and beyond) with Maunsell Wicks Gallery. Sophie Hansen is a food writer and photographer with 20 years experience in food and more recently, online media. Her first book Local is Lovely (named after her blog) was published in 2014 and her second will be published by Murdoch Books in Autumn 2019. She runs social media ecourses for producers and rural/regional businesses through My Open Kitchen, co-hosts a podcast of the same name and in 2016 was named RIRDC National Rural Woman of the Year.
